Bilingual Toddler

How to raise bilingual kiddos
When I was younger being able to speak two languages didn't really matter to me. I didn't see the importance of it, but as I got older I started to really understand and reap the benefits of being bilingual.
Being able to translate for someone in need
Connecting with others that also spoke Spanish in my case
Knowing the positives of future work benefits of being able to speak another language. big PLUS.
Now that I have my son, there was no doubt in our minds that we wanted our son to speak SPANISH. Both my husband & I are able to speak spanish but since the beginning English has been our primary language spoken between us. However, now that we have our son we realized, HOW is he going to learn spanish if we don't speak it?
Adapting to just Spanish with each other has been rather difficult actually (who would have thought) RIGHT?! Did any of you have this problem? We try but we always end up back to English. Now that my son is 2, he is starting to talk and there is no doubt English is his primary language. My son is 2yrs & 4months and he can complete some sentences. Even though I am incredibly proud. I can't help but to feel a little disappointed in myself. I used to say that I was soo proud of my roots and that my children would speak Spanish. I felt guilty because I pictured his future, Him as an older young man saying he doesn't speak spanish and can only understand a little. His parents, both spanish speakers, and he doesn't know. So I tried somethings & slowly but surely he is catching on.
Change tv language to secondary language
-Now when he watches cartoons or even movies he sees them in Spanish
Repeat words both in English & Spanish
-Describe things around the house through or day in Both languages
Whenever I'm speaking to him I try to only speak Spanish
-Using hands or body language just incase he doesn't catch on
Short & simple
-Trying to say & have him repeat short & simple words
Books in Spanish
-Night time stories are in Spanish
Those are some of the things I changed around the house & I have noticed that he is picking it up, slowly as he also learns how to talk.
I have a couple DIY projects I have started to teach him more spanish words & I will shortly post once they are complete.
Are any of you bilingual? any tips?
I think that no matter the other language its a beautiful thing to pass down to your kiddos. Not to mention a pretty awesome thing to be able to speak more than one.
Please if you have great tips, educational movies or shows for learning 2 languages let me know. Email me, comment, & follow.
Much Love
